Abstract
Firstly; we will show that little research that is empirically sound has been done on intonation patterns in Afrikaans (and specifically with respect to interrogatives). Sweeping statements are often made with regard to intonation patterns in interrogatives; which creates misconceptions of the linguistic reality. These theorems can; to a large extent; be corrected through a careful analysis of original data. Subsequently; we will contextualise and then analyse a few representative sentences within a cognitive descriptive framework. In this way; we can achieve a reasonable and cognitively realistic approach to intonation patterns in Afrikaans interrogatives.
