Abstract
Lexical items referring to aspects of the sexual domain are often problematic for the lexicographer. It is; for example; difficult for extension mechanisms such as metaphor and metonymy to be discounted in the lexicographic handling of sexual expressions. In this article; four Afrikaans dictionaries are compared with each other with regard to the lexicographical treatment of sexual expressions. The focus is on both the microstructural and macrostructural treatment of such lemmas; with special attention being paid to arrangement principles and labels. Considering that the treatment of these lexical items is not always satisfying; some suggestions are made for the possible future treatment of sexual expressions. It is; for example; suggested that a psychologistic approach might solve some of the problems related to the ordering of semantic distinctions. It is also illustrated that if a clear distinction is held between sociostylistic and stylistically-functional labels in the labelling of sexual expressions; the user of the dictionary might receive ample guidance with regard to the different contextual situations in which sexual expressions are used.
